Why is going to college the epitome of success? Just the other day I was talking to someone about this family who lived in total poverty somewhere in Alabama and apparently had like 8 kids. Anyway long story short they had a very hard life and yet they all made it into a college and became “successful.” This guy I was talking to went on and on about how amazing it was that these people were able to make something of themselves. He continued to talk about how wonderful it was that all these kids grew up to be successes and didn’t let their circumstances keep them from being “someone.” Now I don’t think there is anything wrong with going to college at all, in fact I’m currently in college so I’m not throwing any stones. But my college degree wont define me, and it sure as hell wont make me successful. It’s a piece of paper… that’s it. The average college student graduates with an average of 37k in debt, hell of a way to start your adult life. In fact with an average starting salary of 33k in my state while making payments of 300 a month you’ll be paying for roughly the next 10 years. Hardly seems worth it, especially when there are dozens of service jobs that pay that much or more and you can be debt free. Now depending on what you want to do with your life a college degree might be your only choice but there are many more options available. But regardless of whether or not you go to college it has nothing to do with defining you. Everyone has an opportunity to be successful regardless of education. Maybe people need to rethink what it means to be successful. Your bank account could be nothing but zeros and you could even have gone hungry a day or two but you could still be a success. Being truly successful comes from within it’s not monetary. Just be yourself and always look for ways to better yourself and try to be a blessing and not a burden to others and in my book you’re a success.
